In the 19th century, the remote Swiss Samnaun Valley could only be reached by road from Austria. Thus Samnaun was excluded from the Swiss customs territory, and retains a privileged 'duty-free' status where you can buy cosmetics, cigarettes, alcoholic drinks and gas on a budget. Special Attraction: From early July through early September the Ischgl cable car conveniently whisks you up and down the mountain into Samnaun Valley.

The toll road winds upward to the world of eternal ice, with ever-larger vistas of lofty peaks and glaciers appearing around each turn, while rock cuts and lovely forests offer scenery in between. Kaunertal Glacier offers year-round skiing. Serviced by nine ski lifts, the naturally divided skiable terrain assures that any type of skier or rider will have a truly enjoyable experience.

Thanks to its sheltered climate that keeps the town mild in winter and cool in summer, Merano is lovingly dubbed "the Gem of South Tyrol". Apart from its breathtaking setting and perfectly maintained town centre, Merano really became a famous vacation destination in the 1930s, when the local waters were discovered to have very unique healing powers. Overnight a spa industry blossomed and thrived here. Scenic Vinschgau, Etsch and Passeier Valleys all lead into the lush basin where Merano lies 324 metres above sea level.
